Authorities in Galveston County are looking into the death of a man who was in Dickinson police custody.

Dickinson Police said 38-year-old Jose Antonio Sanchez was arrested early Sunday after backing into a tree and then striking a building.

Sanchez was arrested for intoxicated driving and taken to Dickinson jail.

While waiting on a breathalyzer test, police said Sanchez fell over in his chair and officers noticed a change in his breathing. He was still conscious at the time, responding verbally to staff.

Sanchez was taken to the hospital by ambulance and suffered a possible cardiac arrest on the way, according to police. He died at the hospital.

The Dickinson Police Department has turned the investigation over to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office.
