Galveston Police: Officer-Involved Shooting After Traffic Stop Leaves One Dead

Galveston Police Chief Vernon Hale said the incident started as a traffic stop at the 5300 block of Avenue L, at around 3am.

An officer-involved shooting in Galveston has left one man dead, police say.

At a press conference Monday morning, Galveston Police Chief Vernon Hale said the incident started as a traffic stop at the 5300 block of Avenue L, at around 3am.

“This resulted in an officer-involved shooting, where one suspect was shot. Officers performed medical treatment until EMS arrived. That suspect was then transported to UTMB, where he was later pronounced deceased,” Hale told reporters.

Hale said the man is a Latin male, approximately 18 to 20-years-old. Police had not identified the man who was killed, due to next-of-kin having yet to be notified. The officer was not injured, and Hale said a weapon was recovered on location.

“The Galveston County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting an impartial investigation, to ensure the actions of our officers were appropriate,” said Hale. “And they’re also working with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.”

Media outlets are reporting the officer will be placed on administrative leave, pending the investigation.
