Authorities said a man who robbed a gas station has been fatally shot by an officer after the suspect fled in a car and struck several other automobiles.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said the unidentified man robbed the Exxon station at 10721 S. Post Oak. He took money and beer Thursday morning before driving away.

Acevedo said the suspect returned to the store when he noticed the clerk had come outside to snap a photo of his car with her cellphone.

She ran back inside and locked the door when he returned, prompting the suspect to fire several shots into the store.

He left and struck several vehicles as he attempted to evade pursuing officers.

He eventually got out of his car with a handgun and refused commands from police. He fled on foot when he was shot by a police lieutenant.

The suspect died at the scene.
