Officials: Stay Off The Roads Until Icy Weather Subsides

Mayor Sylvester Turner urged Houstonians to stay off area roads until the blast of icy weather leaves the region. Houston Matters gets the latest forecast and updates from Harris County Judge Ed Emmett.

A mix of rain and freezing temperatures is creating dangerous road conditions across Greater Houston. Officials are urging residents to stay home.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner addressed the situation at a press conference this morning.

"Please don't get on the road 3 or 4 o’clock because you’ve been at home all morning, and you get a little restless,” he said. “We’re asking you to stay off the roads for the rest of today and into tonight. Stay off the roads."

For the latest weather forecast, Molly Merrifield joined Houston Matters. She's a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Houston/Galveston office. She said temperatures fell throughout the day instead of warming up in the afternoon, like it does most days. And temperatures will continue to fall over night.

Merrifield added that, while ice and freezing rain are the main concern for much of Greater Houston, some places of the region — mainly the northern parts — could even see accumulations of a few tenths of an inch of snow and up to an inch.

Then, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett updated the road conditions and emergency response efforts around the county. He said county personnel have been preparing for this for several days and have closed high overpasses that were at highest risk for ice.

“We live in the south and a day or so from now this will all be gone,” Emmett said.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says people in outside the Houston city limits within Harris County can call TranStar’s Motorist Assistance Program at 713-CALL-MAP (713-225-5627). Within the City of Houston, residents can call 311 to report icy roads.
