The Houston City Council decided Wednesday to participate in the litigation initiated by Harris County against a local container company that the County Attorney accuses of dumping hazardous waste into the City’s sewer system.

Mayor Sylvester Turner said the City will “probably” join the county’s legal action, instead of filing a separate lawsuit against Wright Containers LLC, which is located in southeast Houston.

Representing the state, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is also a plaintiff in the legal actions undertaken by the county, which are led by the office of County Attorney Vince Ryan.

Council Member Robert Gallegos, who represents District I –where the actions perpetrated by Wright Containers have occurred, according to Ryan’s office— said during the meeting that he appreciates the City “taking on polluters.”

A Harris County District Judge has granted a temporary restraining order against Wright Containers, ordering the company to immediately cease any acceptance or dumping of hazardous waste.

A hearing in the case is set for January 19th.
