Gift Cards Help Families Affected By Hurricane Harvey

A special holiday initiative is underway to help families affected by Hurricane Harvey. United Way of Houston is distributing gift cards that can be customized to fit individual needs

United Way of Greater Houston
United Way of Greater Houston’s “Hope for the Holidays” initiative is distributing gift cards to victims of Hurricane Harvey.

The gift cards are being distributed by case managers at United Way‘s partner agencies to help storm victims who are struggling to get back to normalcy this holiday season. Families in need can register by simply dialing 211. Anna Babin is with United Way.

“We know so many people are in transition. They may not be in their homes right now. Some of them may be in their homes, but they’re living on the second floor while the first floor is being repaired. And so we’re really asking donors to consider giving a gift card rather than physical items.”

Physical items create logistical problems for storage and delivery. Gift cards can help families get the specific things they need, whether it’s food, Christmas gifts or replacement appliances.

“So we set up a ‘Hope for the Holidays’ gift page — That’s where anyone can purchase a gift card to help these families.”

The gift card campaign is in addition to United Way’s regular community campaign, which is also underway. United Way provides services to Harris, Montgomery, Waller and Fort Bend Counties.
