Even In Special Session, House Lawmakers Oppose ‘Vouchers’

“We voted six times during the regular session … We’ve talked about this on numerous occasions. I don’t know what else we can do.”

Gov. Greg Abbott and other top Republicans want to create vouchers, to help families with special needs kids pay for private school.

During the special session, Gov. Greg Abbott wants to approve letting families use public tax dollars to subsidize private school tuition for children with special needs.

They’re often called “vouchers” and key Republican leaders in the Senate have endorsed the idea.

But another Republican leader has said no way.

“We voted six times during the regular session. You know,  Lt. Governor (Dan Patrick) asked for a vote, he got a vote. We’ve talked about this on numerous occasions. I don’t know what else we can do,” said state Rep. Dan Huberty, R- Humble, who chairs the House public education committee.

Huberty said that he’d rather give traditional public schools more ways to support children with disabilities. For example, Huberty, who has a son with severe dyslexia, pitched an idea to have public schools start pilot programs to better meet the needs of kids with autism.

“Let me tell you something as a parent, OK. We do not want to create schools that are segregated for our special education population. What we want to do is create opportunities for our children to be successful,” he said.

Instead of vouchers, Huberty said that he wants to work something else: reform how Texas pays for public schools.
