After more than $30 million in renovations, Emancipation Park is holding a re-dedication ceremony Juneteenth weekend.
The ceremony happens at 11am during a day-long festival on Saturday, June 17 celebrating the re-opening of the park.
Historically, Juneteenth is June 19 — the anniversary of the announcement of the end of slavery in Texas. On June 19 this year, there will be an informal gathering at the park to celebrate.
In the video above, we take a quick look the significance of Juneteenth and the evolution of Emancipation Park.
It all began when the original 10 acres of land was purchased by former slaves for $800 in 1872.
