Northbound Spur 5 at I-45 is closing Friday night to make way for a major reconstruction project. We discussed the project with TxDOT's Deidrea George:

"We're taking away the access from Spur 5 to I-45 if you're coming from the University of Houston area," says George.

Those detours go into place as TxDOT prepares to start work on new northbound connectors linking I-45 to U.S. 59. George says the $30 million project is designed to eliminate the weaving that bogs down traffic.

"A lot of time motorists are trying to get to 59 and 288 and they're having to travel two, three, and four lanes to get over to access that," explains George. "While those already in the left lane have to get over to access I-45 North."

Northbound Spur 5 at I-45 will close at 9:00 Friday night and TxDOT expects to have detours in place for about seven months.

The connector project should be finished in 2019.
