Trump Is In Danger Of Overpromising And On Board With Immigration Reform: UH Experts

Two UH political experts break down the president’s first address to Congress.

The tone of President Donald Trump’s first address to Congress “struck a presidential chord” , particularly after two rocky first months at the White House. What remains to be seen is “whether or not that will continue” , says University of Houston’s Political Science Professor Brandon Rottinghaus.

A day after Trump’s address, which took place on Tuesday, both Rottinghaus and Geoffrey Hoffman, Director of the Immigration Clinic at the UH Law Center, joined Houston Public Media’s Digital Team to breakdown his speech.

Even though Trump maintained his “very forceful language” about the border and undocumented immigrants, Hoffman thinks that the president “is on board with immigration reform” but acts cautiously about mentioning it in front of his supporters. For Rottinghaus, on the other side, Trump is “in danger of overpromising.”
