The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is conducting a voter registration drive this week.

The Texas Election Code establishes that school districts have to distribute voter registration forms at least twice during each academic year.

HISD partners with Harris County to train principals and teachers about how to register their students.

The district has just started a drive in all its high schools that will end this Friday, February 24th.

José Gallegos is a student at the Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center, located north of downtown Houston, who has registered to vote.

"My vote is gonna count eventually," says Gallegos "so I should register for what I want and, hopefully, one day I have the choice of be able to pick between somebody that I want and hopefully they win one day."

Yajaira Contreras, who also attends Sam Houston, notes that even if the candidates she will support in upcoming elections win or lose "I still gave my opinion on them, that’s why I think it’s important to vote."

The district has an important election coming up in May regarding the concept known as recapture.

Voters will have to choose if HISD sends money to the state because of rising property values in Houston or whether they allow Austin to make changes that could impact the district's property tax base and the funding it gets.
