Houston Super Bowl Fan Fest Will Take You To Mars

“Future Flight” will entertain visitors at the Super Bowl Live fan festival in Discovery Green.

The host committee for Super Bowl LI in Houston has unveiled the main attraction for its fan festival: a trip to Mars.

Actually, it’s a drop tower seen in many amusement parks, but enhanced by having riders wear virtual-reality goggles. It’s called Future Flight.

Ellen Ochoa, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, presents the Future Flight fan fest attraction during a news conference at the SpaceCom conference in Houston.

Duncan Kennedy with the company that designed the attraction says riders will first see themselves rising up into space to the Red Planet.

“Then, when the seating ring drops to bring them back down, they’re taking a warp ride back to Earth very quickly, suddenly seeing themselves come through the atmosphere, seeing the Gulf of Mexico, city of Houston, and then coming through the open roof of NRG Stadium to hang over the 50-yard line at the end of the drop tower,” Kennedy says.

The “Super Bowl Live” fan festival will take place at Discovery Green in downtown Houston.

It starts 10 days before the big game on Sunday, Feb. 5.
