UPDATE 3:47 P.M.: A sheriff’s spokesman said the man shot by a deputy is now in stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Thomas Gilliland said inmate Ricky Lynn Hall was being examined at Ben Taub and got into an argument with one of the doctors. Hall then grabbed a sharpened object and threatened the doctor.

"At that point, the deputy ordered him to drop that weapon, he refused and, again, threatened the doctor,” Gilliland said. “The deputy discharged his weapon twice, striking Mr. Hall."

The Sheriff's Office Internal Affairs Division is investigating the shooting.

PREVIOUSLY: A Harris County sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a county jail inmate on Thursday who was at Ben Taub Hospital in the Texas Medical Center for treatment, authorities said.

Sheriff Ron Hickman says the deputy shot the inmate twice in the chest after the prisoner grabbed some type of edged medical device as a weapon.

Sheriff’s department spokesman Thomas Gilliland says the inmate attacked a doctor, refused the deputy’s orders to drop the sharp item and was shot. The prisoner was identified as 46-year-old Ricky Lynn Hall. He was undergoing surgery after the Thursday morning shooting.

Houston police are investigating since the hospital is within the city limits.

Records show that Hall has a long criminal record and was taken into custody last week as a parole violator.

No one else was hurt.
