A St. Joseph Hospital patient who was shot by Houston police on August 27, 2015 has filed a lawsuit seeking more than $1 million in damages.

Attorneys for Alan Pean say their client has a history of bipolar disorder and that he drove himself to the hospital to deal with a mental health crisis.

During Pean’s admission, hospital staff contacted hospital security and two Houston police officers responded. Houston police said Pean hit one of the officers, which led to a confrontation and the use of force.

Pean’s attorneys said Pean was unarmed when one officer shot Pean with a Taser and another officer fired his gun.

Pean was arrested on assault charges, but the district attorney later dropped the case.

The defendants include the hospital, the city of Houston and four HPD officers.
