HOUSTON (AP) — Ex-Houston City Council member Jarvis D. Johnson will serve the remainder of the Texas House term of now-Mayor Sylvester Turner.

Voters in Houston on Saturday selected Johnson over Rickey “Raykay” Tezino in District 139. Johnson will serve through 2016. The Texas Legislature convenes in 2017.

Kimberly Willis and Johnson were the top two vote-getters in the March 1 Democratic primary, with no Republican opposition. Willis and Johnson will face off in the May 24 primary runoff to see who will represent District 139, starting next year.

Democrat Turner in January resigned from the Texas House, where he had served since 1988, and was sworn in as mayor of the nation’s fourth-largest city.
