A veteran deputy of the Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 7, underwent hours-long surgery Thursday and is recovering after being shot multiple times.

The following update is from a news conference held Thursday afternoon at Memorial Hermann:

Deputy Constable Alden Clopton is still in the intensive care unit at the Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute.

His surgeon, Dr. Joseph Love, says he remains in critical condition but is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery.

Love says Clopton suffered six bullet wounds in his abdomen and chest and went through hours of surgery. He’s on a ventilator and feeding tubes and Dr. Love expects him to stay in the hospital for another week or so.

Clopton was shot Wednesday night in the Third Ward. Precinct 7 Constable May Walker says he was leaning into a patrol car to help another officer with equipment when it happened. The other officer returned fire but it’s unclear if she hit the suspect. The Houston Police Department is investigating.
