Scenic Houston is making progress in its effort to revitalize a two-mile stretch of Broadway Street. The Texas Department of Transportation is also working to repair the roadway. Scenic Houston Board Chair Harry Masterson says it's one of the first places travelers see when they land in Houston.
"The airport corridor, the gateways to our cities, are unattractive and create a negative first impression," Masterson says. "And as we know, the first impression is the most important."
Scenic Houston has raised about 60 percent of its $7.5 million budget through public funds and private donations. The group plans to plant hundreds of trees, upgrade lighting and improve public transit stops along Broadway.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner commended the effort at a recent event, saying the public-private partnership could benefit other parts of the city.
"We have been doing it, from Discovery Green, Hermann, Memorial, Buffalo Bayou Park," Turner says. "And my hope and my dream would be to see this replicated throughout all the 640 square miles of the city of Houston."
The project is expected to be complete by the end of the year, in time for the 2017 Superbowl in Houston.
