San Antonio native Eric Alva was the first Marine injured in the Iraq War, and received a Purple Heart for his service. After his time with the military, he advocated for repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, and has testified in front of Congress against the policy. He continues to be at the forefront of the gay rights movement.

Jim Obergefell was the plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges, which led to legalized marriage equality nationwide.
