Last week, the Prairie View City Council upheld its decision to rename University Drive in honor of Sandra Bland. Naming and renaming streets in the city of Houston can be a lengthy and sometimes controversial process. On this edition of Houston Matters, explore why and how streets are named and renamed and what prompts the process. We welcome your questions for Jerry Wood, former Deputy Assistant Director of the City of Houston’s planning department. He shares his thoughts about the history of Houston's street names and the stories (and, in some cases, mysteries) behind them.

Also this hour: From Harris County’s lawsuit against Volkswagen to the latest report into a deadly chemical release last fall at a DuPont plant in La Porte, to the impact of a protest at a Houston Whole Foods over products made by prison labor, we explore The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of this week’s news with our “non-expert” panel: The Houston Chronicle’s Joe Holley, La Voz de Houston’s Aurora Losada, and The Breakfast Klub owner and Majic 102.1 Sunday Morning Live host Marcus Davis.

Plus: With the new movie The Martian — about an astronaut stranded on Mars — opening in Houston area theaters today, Houston Matters’ Michael Hagerty talks with Raymond Wagner, who writes about science in the movies for Alamo Drafthouse’s Birth.Movies.Death. magazine. They discuss the challenges of balancing scientific accuracy with compelling narrative — which may be especially critical when your film is shown to Houston-area audiences, which include a lot of engineers like Wagner.
