Superintendent Terry Grier may be leaving the Houston Independent School District early. But he's not calling it quits either.

“I'm not going to retire. I have a lot of things that I want to do that I hope can be pretty creative and innovative around things that I'm passionate about and, of course, that has a lot to do with children,” Grier said, as he explained his resignation before a crowd of district employees at HISD Thursday afternoon.

Grier arrived in Houston in 2009 as a veteran superintendent. He previously led San Diego schools and also districts in North Carolina and Tennessee.

With HISD, he's raised his national profile, winning urban educator of the year from the Council of the Great City Schools among other awards like the Broad Prize.

After his press conference Thursday, Grier told reporters that he's not ruling out another superintendent job elsewhere

“You know, jeez, I'm trying to do decide. You know, right now I'm trying to get through one knee replacement surgery and I've got another one scheduled,” he said.

“But it's going to be a lot of hard work between now and March 1 — we've got a lot to do. And then past that, we're going to look at a lot of options and I imagine we'll land somewhere that has something to do with supporting and helping children.”

Since Grier is leaving Houston before his contract ends in June 2016, it's not clear what his final compensation will be.

Currently, he earns a base salary of $300,000. Last December, he got a bonus of more than $100,000 based on student performance and his job review.
