On Tuesday, the family of Sandra Bland filed a federal lawsuit against the Texas Department of Public Safety, a state trooper, two jailers and the Waller County Jail in connection with Bland’s death while in jail custody following her July 10 arrest. Bland’s family say they still haven’t received enough answers about her death and autopsy.

News 88.7’s Syeda Hasan sat down with Bland’s sister, Sharon, to discuss the lawsuit. On this edition of Houston Matters, we hear their conversation. Then: what are the implications of this lawsuit, and how has this incident played out for law enforcement? We talk with former police and corrections officer, Dr. Melissa Hamilton, who is also a visiting criminal law scholar at the University of Houston Law Center.

Also: Another installment of The Full Menu. Up for debate this week: Houston’s best hot dogs, ice cream and snow cones.

Plus: An interview about Larry Shue’s comedy, The Foreigner being staged now at The Alley Theatre. The play, written in the mid-80’s, is about two Englishmen who visit a rural resort in Georgia. One of the men pretends to be from a fictional, foreign country. To seal the ruse, he speaks a made-up language of gibberish and hilarity ensues. However, despite the comical premise, the play takes on some serious themes as Houston Public Media’s St. John Flynn explains.
