On Tuesday, the family of Sandra Bland filed a federal lawsuit against the Texas Department of Public Safety, the state trooper, two jailers and the Waller County Jail in connection with Bland’s death while in jail custody following her July 10 arrest.

Bland’s family say they still haven’t received enough answers about her death and autopsy.

News 88.7’s Syeda Hasan sat down with Bland’s sister, Sharon Cooper, to discuss the lawsuit.

What are the implications of this lawsuit, and how has this incident played out for law enforcement? Houston Matters talks with former police and corrections officer, Dr. Melissa Hamilton, who is also a visiting criminal law scholar at the University of Houston Law Center.

They also discuss a public forum on police accountability held Aug. 4 at Texas Southern University with Sarah Guidry from TSU’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
