Poll Numbers Put Perry Out Of First Prime-Time GOP Presidential Debate

The former Texas governor isn’t polling well enough to be in the top ten candidates seeking the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. That likely means he, and the five or six others near the bottom of the polls, will be in an earlier debate on Thursday.

Former Texas Governor Perry is currently polling at an average of two percent among likely GOP primary voters.

Rice University Political Science Professor Bob Stein said those voters are too familiar with Perry to get all that excited about him.

“He’s been through this process before. And among primary voters, he is simply somebody they’re familiar with and didn’t like in 2012. And now they have something like 15 or 16 other choices to choose from,” Stein said.

Being part of a smaller debate could give the governor more time and space to hone his debate skills — skills that Stein said are in need of improvement.

“Given his rather poor performance in 2012 when he couldn’t remember the agencies at the federal level he wanted to disband, this might be an opportunity to really show that he can, how can I say, extemporaneously speak for more than a minute-and-a-half and make sense,” Stein said.

For Perry to improve his poll numbers, Stein said the governor will have to find ways to dominate the news cycle, as Donald Trump has, so the governor can show his major donors he’s a viable candidate.
