What links Stephen Hawking, a Russian billionaire, and a Houston artist? It has to do with a press conference in London earlier this week.

“I am here today because I believe the Breakthrough Initiatives are critically important.”

Those were the words spoken in the unmistakable voice of Stephen Hawking at a press conference in London earlier this week. He was there to support an ambitious effort by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, who’s putting $100 million into efforts to communicate with intelligent life beyond Earth.

Milner has asked cosmologist and writer Ann Druyan to seek out a team of individuals to discuss what sort of messages should be sent. One of those individuals is Houston artist Dario Robleto.

“So Ann’s been asked – or tasked—with thinking that through, as well as others, and Ann has asked me to be part of her team,” said Robleto, who just returned to Houston after a four-day whirlwind in London for the big announcement.

So why would an artist be asked to take part in the discussion?

I think she’s looking for people who can speak to fields outside of specifically science,” Robleto says. “The cultural affect through art being one of them.”

The Breakthrough Initiatives project will span across ten years and will involve some of the biggest luminaries in the spheres of cosmology and astrophysics.
