Big Crowd Expected For The Annual Houston Dog Show

Houston plays host to one of the country’s premier canine events. The World Series of Dog Shows is a mixture of exhibition, competition and education.

The entire ground floor of NRG Center has been taken over by the one of the top dog shows in the country. Event chairman Tom Pincus says in the middle of the elaborate show-and-tell, they educate the public on responsible dog ownership.

“We get breeders of different breeds to come into a special ring, where the public is invited to come in, hands-on with the dogs. They can talk to a breeder or an owner about that particular breed, and whether that dog would be right for their families,” said Pincus.

A new feature this year is the Barn Hunt competition. It tests the canine’s instinctive ability to hunt for rats safely secured in a metal tube hidden inside a course made of hay.

Top breeds show and compete on one end of NRG Center. The other end has everything from veterinary services, to dog treats to pet toys. Angie Klinkerman of Houston is one of the vendors.

“I like my contribution to it. I have time to enjoy the dogs without being involved in the constant grooming and the judging and, I have my own dog, and that’s enough of grooming for me,” said Klinkerman.

Wednesday is the only free day of the event that runs through Sunday.
