Family spokesman Jim McGrath says the former first lady is using this milestone birthday to promote literacy.

“There’s a big celebration in Kennebunkport this evening on the lawn of St. Anne’s Church, where the Bushes have been attending church in Maine all of their lives,” he says. “In the case of President Bush, and so there’s a tent there on the lawn at St. Anne’s where they’ve gathered family and friends. And it’s also a fundraiser for the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, which has a very active chapter here in Houston chaired by Neal and Maria Bush, so it’s a family celebration, but it’s also helping to put some sheckles in the coffers of a very good cause in family literacy.”

Mrs. Bush says that parents’ literacy level is a significant predictor of their child’s future educational success, influencing generations to follow.

McGrath isn’t surprised that Barbara Bush is tying her special day with a good cause.

“It’s remarkable,” he says. “I just learned this morning that they had raised $17.3 million for family literacy, and it’s really a fitting tribute to Barbara Bush and her passion and her dedication to the cause of family literacy that this money’s been raised. It’s gonna touch a lot of lives, and I’m sure she would say that it’s the most fitting, it’s the best present anybody could give her, that ability to touch and help elevate and lift other lives.”

The Bush Foundation and Dollar General are partnering with X Prize for a $7 million global competition to create an app to boost adult literacy skills.
