On this Memorial Day, we’re going to listen back to some of our favorite Houston Matters conversations and reports of recent months, including a few that seemed particularly appropriate on this holiday — and some that would be worthwhile to hear again on any day.

Back in November of 2014, Edel Howlin sat down with Terry Jung, the Executive Director of the Lone Survivor Foundation, and clinical psychologist Rebecca Lancaster from the Michael E. Debakey VA Medical Center. They discussed how since 2010 the foundation has sought to help veterans deal with post traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries and other physical and emotional challenges related to military service. Then we learn more about the Texas Flying Legends Museum, which preserves and commemorates World War II era aircraft. LISTEN AND SEE A SLIDE SHOW HERE

Also: We visit the Coast Guard’s Air Station Houston, whose members are called on to perform search and rescue operations off the Texas Gulf Coast. LISTEN AND CHECK OUT VIDEO HERE

Then we learn about a Houston man who sifted through his grandfather’s many love letters written during World War II and plans to turn them into a book. LISTEN HERE

Then we revisit our conversation with Ziggy Gruber, owner and operator of Kenny and Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen. He’s the principal subject of  Deli Man – a 2015 documentary which tells the story of the American delicatessen. LISTEN, SEE PHOTOS, AND WATCH THE DELI MAN TRAILER HERE

We learn about the joys of kayaking Houston’s bayous. LISTEN HERE

And we visit a cat circus. That’s right, a circus of trained felines. LISTEN AND CHECK OUT VIDEO HERE

Houston Matters gets underway today at noon on 88.7FM or listen online.
