Census: Houston Among Top 10 US Cities With Largest Population Gain

Half of the 10 cities with the largest population gains between 2013 and 2014 were in Texas.

Houston is one of five Texas cities that are among the top 10 with the largest population gain, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth each added 18,000 to 36,000 people between July 2013 and July 2014.

Census demographer Sarah Gibb said Houston had the second largest numeric gain in the country behind New York City.

“It increased by about 36,000 people between 2013 and 2014, and that’s about 1.6 percentage growth,” Gibb said.

Houston also is one of only ten U.S. cities with more than one million people.

Until this year, Texas was the only state to have three cities with one million or more people.

California has now joined Texas with that distinction.
