Police say Joseph Stewart, owner of Stewart Cadillac in Midtown, had just pulled into the driveway of his townhome around 11:30 Thursday night, and opened the garage door. When the 55 year old walked into the garage, someone approached and shot him.
Stewart made it inside his home where he was found dead.
“We heard the gun shots last night,”
Jackie Barry lives a few houses down.
“I woke up to them and of course, didn’t look out until I saw police cars and fire trucks coming, and came out and found out what had happened,” Barry says.
The residents for the most part, are aware of each other, but it took this incident for Barry to finally meet her neighbor Judy Docherty. She says police were called to Stewart’s home about two weeks ago.
“It doesn’t sound like it may have been a robbery. I don’t know. I’m not a police officer. But what I will say is that I don’t think it’s an indictment on our neighborhood. I think it’s an indictment on society,” Docherty says.
The neighborhood is a mixture of old homes and new multi-family developments. Houston Police investigators say the motive for the murder is not known.
The Houston Police Department and detectives did not respond to a message asking for further comment for this story.
