Greater Houston Residents Report Property Damage From Unusually Large Hail

Some residents saw hail the size of baseballs as severe thunderstorms swept through the region over the weekend.

It’s not uncommon for the region to see hailstorms in April, but they’re usually not this widespread. That’s according to Dan Reilly with the National Weather Service. He says the warm moist air mixing with colder air overhead led to severe storms and large hail.

“Some spots even had tennis ball-sized hail, but numerous reports of golf ball were found in the area,” Reilly says.

Some of the hardest-hit areas include Tomball, Somerville, Copperfield and Jersey Village.

Houston’s Office of Emergency Management has received reports of damage to cars, lawns, roofs and windows. Spokesman Francisco Sanchez says it can be difficult to protect against hail damage, but there are some steps you can take.

“There’s often a myth of putting tape across your windows as you would for a hurricane,” Sanchez says. “That’s not going to do a whole lot. The best thing for people to do is to take care of themselves. Definitely bring your car under a car port or in the garage if you can. Bring your pet indoors.”

Sanchez says they’re still assessing just how much damage was caused by the hail.
