Grand Parkway Frontage Roads Open Early In North Harris County

New mainlanes of the Grand Parkway won’t open until later this year, but drivers in north Harris County can now take advantage of some of the frontage roads.

Crews are still putting the finishing touches on the State Highway 99 Grand Parkway interchange over I-45 North, but the frontage roads are done so officials decided to go ahead and open them to traffic.

Drivers can now use those roads headed northbound and southbound along I-45, and also along the Grand Parkway, eastbound and westbound from 45 to Holzwarth.

Linda Merritt gave us a tour of the construction site. She’s with Zachry-Odebrecht, the company that’s building the Grand Parkway. Merritt says they decided to open the frontage roads early because of all the growth in the area.

“We have a lot of large businesses in the area such as Exxon-Mobil, Southwestern Energy, that have relocated and opened their headquarters here,” says Merritt.

Merritt says the frontage roads will also serve the new residential areas like Springwoods Village.

“And the businesses on the northbound frontage road will benefit from customers being able to more easily access their businesses and find them,” explains Merritt.

The Grand Parkway is a controlled-access toll road that will eventually circle the entire Houston area. The northern segment from U.S. 290 to U.S. 59 is set to open later this year. The frontage roads will be free to drive.
