We’ve come a long way from the “This is your brain on drugs" PSA where a man breaks an egg into a frying pan and uses that to demonstrate what happens to your brain when you take a harmful substance.

How harmful drugs are and what they really do to us is becoming more widely known as the research around this topic increases, but also as it seems drugs don't appear to be going anywhere. What we know about the effect of drugs on your body is something that's up for discussion at this year's Brain Awareness Week at UTHealth.

To learn more about the latest research, we talk with Joy Schmitz, a professor at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and director of the Center for Neurobehavioral Research on Addictions (CNRA) at UTHealth Medical School.
