TxDOT has shut down I-35 in both directions, about 40 miles north of Austin, after an 18-wheeler crashed into an overpass under construction.

The Associated Press spoke with the Department of Transportation spokeswoman Becky Ozuna. Ozuna says the oversized tractor trailer hit a beam being used to build a bridge across Interstate 35 on Thursday morning. She says several beams then toppled onto other vehicles.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Trooper D.L. Wilson says one person was killed and three were injured.

Motorists are encouraged to take alternative routes such as SH 95 between Temple and Georgetown; US 190 from Belton to Killeen; and 195 to Georgetown.

Check this TxDOT map for the crash location, current traffic and detours. At this time, TxDOT officials don’t have an estimate about when I-35 will reopen.
