Houstonian and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz officially announced his presidential run on Monday (3/23/15). But in a field still taking shape, could he actually be a viable candidate to win the GOP nomination in 2016? On this edition of Houston Matters, we’ll ask political scientist Brandon Rottinghaus.

Then, we’ll turn to the state’s contract process. There’s evidence of incidents when contractors have been used for more than one state-run body, without a formal bidding process to win the contract. We’ll talk it over.

Also this hour: The Public Interest Research Group recently released its annual report grading each state based on how well it provides government spending information online. We’ll find out how Texas fared.

We’ll also talk with George Díaz, Assistant Professor of History at Sam Houston State University, about his book Border Contraband: a History of Smuggling across the Rio Grande, which examines the history of smuggling back and forth between the Mexico and Texas border over the last century.

And: A new documentary premieres tonight on PBS about the political career of Houston native James Baker, the former Secretary of State and former White House Chief of Staff. James Baker: The Man Who Made Washington Work details Baker's rise from Houston oil and gas attorney to the national and global stage during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. We’ll hear from the folks behind the documentary.
