A new documentary premieres tonight on PBS about the political career of Houston native James Baker, the former Secretary of State, former Commerce Secretary and former White House Chief of Staff. James Baker: The Man Who Made Washington Work details Baker’s rise from Houston oil and gas attorney to the national and global stage during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Houston Matters’ Michael Hagerty talked recently with director Eric Stange and executive producer John Hesse who say Baker wasn’t interested in politics until a personal tragedy struck.

James Baker: The Man Who Made Washington Work premieres on Houston Public Media, TV 8, tonight at 7:30.
