Houston is no stranger to playing host to marquee sporting events that attract people from all over the world. This weekend’s NCAA Basketball South Regional at NRG Stadium, will feature Duke and Utah in one contest, and UCLA taking on Gonzaga in the other.

AJ Mistretta with the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, says all four teams are expected to bring thousands of fans to Houston.

“When we host something, we see an impact on hotels, restaurants, nightlife, everything that the city offers, and that’s why we go after these big events. They’re so important to us and to our economy,” Mistretta says.

Doug Hall heads the local organizing committee for the NCAA Final Four here in Houston next year. The city also hosted the event in 2011. Hall says the event grows in size and popularity every year.

“I think one of the big differences is that Houston’s expectation, having just hosted it five years previously, Houstonians will know what to expect more than what they did, because it had been almost 40 years since we hosted before,” Hall says.

Hall says it’s expected that fans next year will spend more than the $125 million that was spent during the Final Four here in Houston five years ago.
