38 Countries Meet In Houston To Network In Global Food-Banking Practices

Food bank representatives from around the world are in Houston for the Global Food-banking Network’s 9th annual Food Bank Leadership Institute. They’re looking at best practices that can help in the fight against hunger.

Representatives from 38 countries are in Houston discussing hunger relief and food waste. The challenges faced by food banks around the world are similar, even as their cultures might be different.

“There’s food banks that are kind of just getting started,” says Brian Greene with the Houston Food Bank. “And they’re trying to develop systems on how they can capture food waste and channel to help people in need.”

For example, Gabrielle Kirstein with the Hong Kong Food Bank is interested in becoming more efficient.

She says “We’ve been doing things very manually, so this year I’m very keen to meet with food banks that are a little further down the line from us and to see how they’ve gone from that transition to bringing in more sophisiticated software and technology to be able to help them collect and deliver more food.”

Teodora Bakardzhieva says the Bulgarian Food Bank is relatively new, and she has several goals with this conference, including “how to negotiate with the potential food donors, how to establish good partnership with charities, with the feeding organizations.”

The Global Foodbanking Network says member around the world last year rescued 1.1 billion pounds of food and redirected it to feed hungry people through schools, orphanages, senior centers and soup kitchens.
