Volunteers and officials from the Coalition for the Homeless recently completed their annual count of unsheltered homeless in Houston, as well as the remainder of Harris and Fort Bend counties.

That figure, along with the number of sheltered homeless, makes up the area’s total homeless population, which was 5,351 in 2014.

This story originally aired on PBS NewsHour Weekend on Saturday, January 31. PBS NewsHour Weekend airs Saturdays and Sundays at 6 p.m. on TV 8.
