When your relatives come to visit for the holidays, you may be getting some nicer gifts this year. Thanks to low gas prices, Texans will have more Christmas cash.

AAA’s Doug Shupe predicts a little over eight million Texans will make a trip of 50 miles or more for the holidays. That’s a four percent jump from last year.

And Shupe says those travelers will be paying a lot less for gas. The statewide average in Texas is now $2.31 a gallon.

“Compare that to a year ago. We were paying $3.05. So we’re paying about 74 cents less per gallon today than we were a year ago.”

And that means leftover cash for holiday spending. Shupe says at this time last year it cost about $43.00 to fill a 14-gallon tank. Now it’s about $32.00.

“That’s a savings of about $11.00 per tank of gasoline, which really is a savings and comes in handy for a lot of folks who are going to be traveling long distances during the year-end holidays.”

Around the country close to 99 million Americans are expected to travel during the 13-day holiday period. Most of those people will travel by car.
