Houston-area vehicle sales for the twelve months ending in June reached the highest level for any twelve-month period on record. Car, truck, and SUV sales across the region topped 376,000 for the twelve months ending in June.  That breaks the previous record set in November 2001 by more than 4,000 vehicles.

Steve McDowell is president of InfoNation and publisher of TexAuto Facts. He says there are two major reasons so many people are buying new cars.

“Consumer confidence, obviously, is very high, and I think that’s driven by the fact that many people are feeling very comfortable, probably, with their 401(k)s, considering where the market is,” McDowell says. “Also, the job market has been so strong, particularly in the Houston region, where we actually have a shortage of skills, particularly in the building trades.”

Houston-area vehicle sales for January through June of 2014 topped 195,000, up nearly 17 percent compared to the same period in 2013. Nationwide, year-to-date sales are up about 4 percent compared to the same period last year.
