Houston School District Proposes Teacher Raises

The latest budget proposal also changes funding for magnet schools.

Right now the starting salary for Houston school teachers is just under $47 thousand a year.

Their pay would increase to over $48 thousand dollars under the district’s latest budget proposal.

That pay increase would cost the district $20 million. But the entry level salary in Houston schools would still lag other districts in the area.

It’s just one change in Superintendent Terry Grier’s financial plan for the state’s largest school district.

Another change is a new way to fund magnet programs based on their level and theme like fine arts or science.

Grier says he wants to make magnet funding more equitable across the district.

HISD board members are expected to vote on the budget for next school year later in June.
