Marshall Lerman and his daughter celebrate at Match Day

All across the country, at the same moment, medical students rip open their envelopes and find out where they’re headed for residency.

Standing next to his wife, two young daughters and his parents, Marshall Lerman is waiting to find out where he’ll spend the next three years of his life.

Lerman is a bit different from many of his classmates. He’s graduating from medical school to start a second career as a pediatrician.

“I’m an attorney.”

Lerman practiced litigation defense and corporate and securities law for seven years before deciding to go to medical school.

“And just felt very unfulfilled and decided children’s where I wanted to utilize my skill set to make a difference.”

Now at the age of 37, Lerman is heading into a three-year residency before he goes into private practice. His wife, Amy Lerman, says when Marshall first brought up the idea of medical school, she immediately knew it was the right choice.

“Not every medical student is like this one. He goes to school and he studies and he takes tests and he sees patients. And then he comes home and he’s a daddy and he’s a husband and he’s got stuff to do in our house and places to go as a family and we just make it work.”

Marshall Lerman holds his oldest daughter and his envelope as he waits to find out where he and his family will go next. He’s applied in Houston, San Antonio and his hometown Dallas.

“3, 2, 1, Open!”

“Okay…open…open it, open it!

“Houston, Houston…no, no, no, no! San Antonio!”

So it’s off on another adventure for a family that’s not afraid to head in a new direction.
