Houston Public Media this week announces that Eddie Robinson has joined News 88.7 as the new local “Morning Edition” news anchor. Robinson fills the anchor position vacated by longtime news anchor and reporter Rod Rice, who retired in January after more than 12 years with Houston’s public radio news station.

“News 88.7 is an important part of keeping Houstonians informed as they start their day and we are confident that they will appreciate the experience and talent that Eddie Robinson brings to the broadcast,” said Jack Williams, Houston Public Media news director.

Robinson, a native of Mississippi and former resident of Houston, comes to News 88.7 from radio station WNYC in New York City where he worked as an on-air news host and producer for the past four years. He hosted numerous shows and cultural programming for New York’s Public Radio’s performance venue, The Green Space. He also co-hosted Radio America’s weekly news program, “For Your Ears Only,” and served as a contributor for “Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen.” Robinson worked with CBS Radio for more than seven years as an on-air personality for WNEW’s Mix 102.7 FM and Sports Radio 66 WFAN. His experience also includes working in network television as a writer and producer for CBS News and “The Early Show”, as a writer for Time Warner’s New York 1, a digital programming manager for Rhapsody International and MTV Networks, and sports host for SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

“I’m honored to join the award-winning team at News 88.7,” said Robinson. “It’s exciting to return to Houston, a vibrant and diverse city with a dynamic cultural scene.”

Remarkably, Robinson’s award-winning career as a broadcaster began when he was a sophomore in high school in Mississippi. He worked secretly for a Top 40 FM station and a Country/Western AM station as on-air radio personality “Fast Eddie.”

Robinson has a Master of Arts in Media Ecology from New York University and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Prairie View A&M University. He is a member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists (AFTRA).
