Houston Police are investigating a major theft from Lakewood Church. Church officials say thousands of dollars of member donations were stolen. Lakewood Church sent an email to its members yesterday, with an announcement about the theft.

According to the email, cash, checks and credit card numbers were stolen from the collections that were taken up during the Saturday and Sunday services.

Church members were warned to watch their bank and credit card accounts for any suspicious activity.

The funds, which were insured, were stolen from the church’s safe after the weekend collections had been locked away. An employee discovered the theft on Monday morning.

Lakewood representatives declined requests for interviews, saying they are working with the Houston Police Department and do not want to compromise the investigation by commenting at this time.

A Houston Police spokesman confirmed approximately $600,000 was stolen.
