About 5000 riders are expected to set off from Houston City Hall early on the morning of Sunday, March 16, and they can choose from 20, 40, or 60 mile routes.

It’s the 9th year for the annual Tour de Houston

Susan Christian with the Mayor’s Office of Special Events says this year’s route heads west and north, into the Galleria and Memorial areas.

“You’ll see a lot of neighborhoods. You’ll pass through business districts. You’ll see some historic neighborhoods, but the really cool part that you’ll see is Houston by bike, and that’s a real special thing.”

And Christian says the Tour de Houston is designed for riders of all fitness levels, with rest stops along the route.

“It is a shared road ride. We have a lot of presence with peace officers at the major intersections.”

Mayor Annise Parker says the purpose of the Tour de Houston is to promote physical fitness and alternative transportation.

Proceeds from the ride will benefit the Parks Department’s effort to replant trees lost to drought.
