In 1953, New Zealand explorer and mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary and his Nepalese Sherpa partner Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Nearly 40 years later – in 1990 – Hillary’s son Peter himself reached the summit, making Edmund and Peter Hillary the first father-son duo to conquer Mount Everest. Last week, Peter Hillary was in Houston to speak at a luncheon for the Nature Conservancy and he and the Conservancy’s Texas State Director Laura Huffman sat down with Houston Matters’ Michael Hagerty, who asked Hillary what it was like growing up in a family where adventure was part of everyday life.
