District Seven in the Houston Independent School District stretches from River Oaks to Sharpstown.
Harvin Moore is running for a fourth term to represent that district on the school board.
Moore is facing a challenge from a former school teacher Anne Sung.
Sung is also involved in a grass roots organization for public education.
“I would say I’m an educational advocate.”
Sung says she’ll bring her experience as a teacher to the school board.
“Kids learn best in a high challenge, low stress environment. And right now in HISD, we’re giving them the opposite. It’s very high stress because of the testing and the benchmark testing that’s coming from the district. And it’s low challenge because we’re teaching to the test.”
The incumbent Moore takes a different approach. He says it’s important to change education like new teacher evaluations.
“I think education for decades has needed to be rethought and restructured.”
Moore volunteered with the charter school network KIPP before winning election to the HISD board ten years ago.
“It’s very gratifying to see the huge improvement that’s taken place in the HISD but since there’s so much further to go, I want to complete a lot of that work, which will be done in the next few years.”
Registered voters can cast their ballot at the polls until 7 p.m. this evening.
