Under an agreement with the University of North Carolina, Academy will become the official partner of Tar Heel Athletics. The retailer will provide support for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as for Tar Heel football, baseball, soccer and lacrosse.

The company also announced an agreement with the Carolina Panthers, making it the official sporting goods retailer for the NFL franchise. Eric Herrera is a spokesman for Academy.

“This is really significant for Academy Sports + Outdoors, mainly because the Charlotte market is new for us. It’s we can really, sort of, tie in to the local community there, and just give ourselves a unique way to engage with our fans there and fans for both teams as well.”

Academy operates more than 160 stores across thirteen states. But the company only broke into North Carolina last year. It now operates four stores in the Charlotte region, including one over the state line in South Carolina.
