Texas House Passes Abortion Bill; Sends to Senate Committee

The Texas House has passed House Bill 2, creating new abortion restrictions.  It happened just after 11 this morning, as Speaker of the House Joe Strauss took the vote.

“Question occurs on final passage of House Bill 2. It’s a record vote. (Would) the clerk ring the bell? (bell sfx) “Have all voted? Have all members voted? The 96 ayes and 49 nays, House Bill 2 is finally passed.”

The 91 to 53 vote sends the legislation to a Senate Committee.

Several activists appeared to be led from the gallery by DPS Troopers after the vote. Supporters of both sides of the issue have descended on the Capitol Building in Austin.
