John MacFarlane was one of the founders of Milestone Venture Group, a private equity investment group here in Houston. He was also Chairman of the Association for Community Broadcasting, the board that supports fundraising efforts for KUHF News, Classical 91.7 and HoustonPBS.

Houston Public Media Executive Director Lisa Shumate says MacFarlane was one of the key architects of the plan that merged the three public stations into one organization.

“It’s just a tremendous loss to us. And the thing that we will do for John MacFarlane and Leslie Flynne is make sure that his vision of us thriving and being strong continue and even exceed what would be his expectations.”

MacFarlane served on the board since 2006 and became chairman in 2012.

Past Chairman George Connelly says MacFarlane left a legacy of leadership for Houston Public Media.

“What literally jumped out at me, from the day I met him, was that public broadcasting in Houston is something that really mattered to John. He wasn’t just going to be a financial contributor, he was a guy looking for something to do to make a difference, to make sure the stations all had continuity and a great future and to take them to the next level.”

MacFarlane is survived by his wife, Leslie Flynne, who said of her husband “he loved life and all the opportunities it holds.” He also leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren. MacFarlane was 66 years old.
